Shepherd wins title at Winner Invite

By Jay Davis

Jaden Shepherd won the 126-pound title, leading the Tigers to a fifth-place finish at the Winner Invite in Winner on Saturday.
“We had another great showing,” said coach Scott Stone. “There were just nine points separating second and fifth place.
“If Tucker Holzer had not gotten injured we might have made up those points.”
Holzer, who was coming off a three-pin night in Linton on Thursday, suffered a knee injury but is expected back on the mat in a week or two.
Shepherd spearheaded a Tiger team that sent three wrestlers to the finals and finished with 11 wrestlers placing, including two who were wrestling as non-scorers.
“The final score says we took fifth, but the boys did well,” said Stone. “It was a barn-burner of a tournament.”
Shepherd, ranked third this week at 126 pounds, picked up two pins to get to the finals where he beat fourth-ranked Hunter Peterson of Philip Area 8-5 for the title.
Jaden Madison and Isaac Olson took second place.
Madison, ranked third at 132 pounds, knocked off eighth-ranked Cameron Biggins of Winner 5-3 and then pinned ninth-ranked Zach Sykora of Bon Homme/Scotland in the semifinals. Second-ranked Lucas Smith of Potter County beat Madison 8-0 in the finals.
Olson took second at 138 pounds. He picked up two first-period pins and then stuck 11th-ranked Vladik Johnson of Burke/Gregory. In the title tilt, Olson (ranked 10th) ran into second-ranked Alex Caba of Bon Homme/Scotland and lost a 13-2 major decision.
Quinten Fish took third at 285 pounds. After falling 3-2 in tiebreaker overtime to Geoffrey Devries of Philip Area, Fish beat Brandon Whitley of Redfield-Doland 6-2 for third.
Caden Lenz, Keegan Pearman and Nathan Bauer finished fourth.
Lenz, ranked 10th at 113 pounds, went 2-2. He beat a pair of Winner wrestlers, but was pinned by top-ranked Carl Cronin of Potter County and fourth-ranked Jackson Eklund of Burke/Gregory.
Pearman had wins over Tryston Ogle of Sully Buttes and Chayce Rausch of Potter County at 120 pounds, but was pinned by seventh-ranked Reece Heltzel of Philip Area and beaten 11-2 by 11th-ranked Trevor Peters of Winner.
Bauer went 2-2 at 160 pounds. His wins were over Kade Hellman of Bon Homme/Scotland and Alex Martinez of Potter County. His losses were to first in state Rance Johnson of Philip Area and eighth-ranked Chris Van Huevelen of Sunshine Bible Academy

Gerry routed Louis Torres of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree with a 15-0 tech fall for fifth place. His first win was over David Hassing of Bon Homme/Scotland. Gerry’s losses were to Austin Wiley of Sully Buttes and Caleb McNeil of Redfield-Doland.
Non-scorers Ayden Stickney and Mason Schoenhard finished fifth.

Lee Wolf
Next up for the Tigers is the Lee Wolf Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Aberdeen on Saturday.
“No one is guaranteed anything in this meat-grinder of a tournament,” said Stone. “This is going to be good for us. It’s the best tourney we could ask for.”
Last year, Shepherd, Olson and Madison finished sixth and Gerry took eighth.
The makeup date for the Miller/Highmore-Harrold Quadrangular is Feb. 3. Before that, the Tigers have added a date and will compete at the Sully Buttes Quadrangular in Onida on Thursday, Jan. 28.
