South Dakotans to vote for change on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, South Dakotans will go to the polls for the mid-term elections, where a seat in the U.S Senate is up for election and many state offices are on the ballot.

On the national level, voters will choose a U.S. Senator to replace retiring Sen. Tim Johnson. There are four candidates in the race for the senate seat including Republican Mike Rounds of Pierre, Democrat Rick Weiland of Sioux Falls, and Independents Larry Pressler of Sioux Falls, and Gordon Howie of Rapid City.

Challenging incumbent Republican Kristi Noem from Castlewood for the lone seat in the House of Representatives is Democrat Corinna Robinson from Sioux Falls.

On the state level, incumbent Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard and Lt. Gov. Matt Michels are facing a challenge from Democrats Susan Wismer and Susy Blake and Independents Michael J. Myers and Lora Hubbel.

There are four candidates vying for the secretary of state job, replacing Jason Gant who decided not to run for a second term. Those candidates include Republican Shantel Krebs of Renner, Democrat Angelia Schultz of Aberdeen, Libertarian Emmett Reistroffer of Sioux Falls and Constitution Party candidate Lori Stacey Sioux Falls.

In a state race with a Mobridge connection, Constitution Party candidate Wayne Schmidt is running for Public Utilities Commissioner. He faces Democrat Davis Allen  of Yankton and Republican incumbent Gary Hanson of Sioux Falls.

Current Attorney General Republican Marty Jackley of Pierre is being challenged by Libertarian candidate Chad Huber of Sioux Falls. Incumbent State Auditor, Republican Steve Barnett of Pierre, is being challenged by Libertarian party candidate Kurt Evans of Wessington Springs.

Three candidates are on the ballot in the race for South Dakota State Treasurer. They include incumbent Republican Rich Sattgast of Pierre, Democrat Denny Pierson of Sioux falls and Libertarian Ken Santema of Aberdeen.

In the Mobridge area, most of the elections were decided in the primaries, but there is still a race for Walworth County Commissioner from District 1, where incumbent Denis Arbach, a Democrat from the Hoven, area faces a challenge from Brian Beaman, a Republican from Selby.

In Campbell County there is a race in two districts. There is a four-way race for the seat in District 1, a four-year termed seat for the area that includes Herreid. With incumbent Morrell Fuerhrer retiring the candidates to fill that seat includesDemocrat Dave Schumacher, Republican Robert Shadwell, and Independent candidates Steve Dupper and Gary Weismantel.

In District 5, two candidates are vying for that seat, also a four-year term, on the Campbell County Commission.

The incumbent is Republican Aldine Mitteider of Herreid, who is challenged by Independent Lorraine Anderson of Glenham.

There are seats on both the Corson and Dewey County Commissions that are on the ballot on Tuesday.  In Corson County District 3 Democrat James W. Edinger of McIntosh is facing Republican Donald V. Pazie of Morristown.

In the Corson County race for sheriff, long-time sheriff Keith Gall of McIntosh faces a challenge from Jeffrey Tuntland of Little Eagle.

In Dewey County, two seats on the county commission are up for election, one in District 2 and one in District 3.

In District 2, Republican Leon Voegele of Trail City faces off against Democrat Rod Enright of Timber Lake.

In District 3, Republican John Bachman of Eagle Butte faces Democrat Dee Ann Lawrence, also of Eagle Butte.

Also on the ballots (sample ballots can be found on page 9B, 10B and 11B of this issue of the Tribune) are the state and national candidates.

Polling places in Walworth County will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and are located at Scherr-Howe Arena in Mobridge; the Akaska Community Center; the Java Community Center, the Selby Senior Citizens Center, the Hoven Airport and Glenham Fire Hall.
