St. Thomas More too much for Tigers

By Jay Davis FB Big 2

Third-ranked St. Thomas More came at the Tigers on the ground and then went to the air. Both attacks worked as the Cavaliers handed the Tigers a 56-6 defeat at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.
“St. Thomas More had good size and great athleticism,” said coach Nathan Lamb. “They are probably the most athletic team we’ve seen.”
The 7-1 Cavaliers ran the ball right at the Tigers after taking the opening kickoff. St. Thomas More went 64 yards in seven plays, all on the ground. Riley Scherr capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
The second More drive was just three plays. Facing third and five, Mathew Eastmo dropped back and hit Jacob Henderson, who took the ball the distance, making it 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Tigers started moving the ball on their second possession. They picked up two first downs, but the drive was thwarted when a fake punt came up short of the first down.
The Cavaliers responded by going 65 yards in three plays with Scherr traveling 26 yards for the touchdown.
“We came out flat,” said Lamb, “which seems to be a problem against the ‘billboard’ teams we face.”
The score was 35-0 when the Tigers mounted their only scoring drive of the game. Starting at their own 13 after a More punt, the Tigers got out of the hole when Austin Borah by taking off for 27 yards on the first play. Five plays later, Mason Keller hit Conner Stoick down the sideline for a 27-yard gain that moved the ball inside the 10 to the nine-yard line. After a pair of incompletions, Keller spotted Ethan Kettering open in the middle of the end zone. Kettering cradled the pass and the Tigers were on the board with 24 seconds left in the first half.
The loss did not hurt the Tigers’ playoff standing as they stayed at third in the region. It did do some damage to team depth.
Jordan Feist suffered a concussion and his season is done. Brett Van Vugt suffered an ankle injury and Nathan Thompson suffered a knee injury. While Brett Lang hurt an ankle and now has injuries to both lower legs, he should be ready to play.
