Steiger leads every category for 2019-20 Tigers


A lot of opponents found themselves in predicaments like this during Jacob Steigers’ 170-win career as a Tiger wrestler.

Not only did Tiger Jacob Steiger take fifth at the Class B Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls, securing his second state tournament medal, and finish as the Tigers’ all-time winner with a 171-70 career record, he led this year’s Tigers in every single category this season.
The 132-pound senior, who fourth-year head coach Nathan Ford cited as having one of the most prolific careers in Tiger wrestling history, placed in every tournament this year. He took first at the Stanley County Invitational, Faulkton Invitational, Mobridge-Pollock Round Robin, Winner Invitational, Lemmon/McIntosh Round Robin and the Region 4B Wrestling Tournament in Hill City. He finished second at the Webster Wrestling Invitational and the Mid Dakota Monster in Presho. He finished third at the MVPCS Titan Invitational in Plankinton, fourth at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre and seventh in the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen.
Steiger led the Tigers in wins with a 43-9 record and was first in every category. He led the Tigers with 21 pins, seven major decisions and two technical falls. He was first in takedowns with 61, escapes with 32, reversals with 21, two-point near falls with 10 and three-point near falls with 33.
Senior Josh Norder at 195 pounds, went 28-17 while taking second in Mobridge and Lemmon, third in Faulkton and Webster, fourth at Stanley County, and fifth at MVPCS, Lee Wolf, the BDC and the Region 4 tournaments. He was second on the team with 19 pins while reaching double digits in takedowns with 32 and reversals with 12.
Senior Kyler Pearman at 220 pounds, reached his first state tournament by taking third place at the Region 4B tournament. He went 16-8, taking third in Stanley County and Faulkton and sixth at the BDC. He had 19 takedowns and seven reversals for the season.
Senior Tucker Holzer went 10-11 at 160 pounds before an injury curtailed his season. He took first in Mobridge, fourth at Stanley County and sixth at the Mid Dakota Monster. Holzer reached double digits in takedowns with 11 and escapes with 10.
Senior Gavin Zimmer was a first-year wrestler at 152 pounds. He went 7-15 on the year and took first place in Mobridge and sixth at Faulkton.
Junior Kamron Pearman went 21-17 at 145 pounds. He took first in Mobridge and Lemmon, fourth in Webster, fifth in Winner and Region 4B and sixth at the Mid Dakota Monster. Kamron recorded 23 takedowns and was second on the team with 17 reversals, three-point near falls with eight and two-point near falls with seven.
Freshman Cole Wellner went 15-13 at 220 pounds. He placed first in Mobridge, fourth in Winner, fifth at MVPCS, sixth at the Lee Wolf and eighth at the Mid Dakota Monster.
Freshman Remmington Ford went 18-22 at 120 pounds. Ford took first in Mobridge and Lemmon, fourth in Webster and sixth at Region 4B.
Freshman Jesse Bearsheart went 12-19 at 182 pounds. He took second in Mobridge, third in Lemmon and at sixth at Region 4B.
Trent Two Hearts went 11-24, while wrestling at 152 and 160 before settling in a 170. He took second in Mobridge, third in Lemmon and sixth at Stanley County and Faulkton.
Two eighth graders had successful seasons after being called up to the varsity
Wyatt Wientjes took fourth place at 113 pounds at the Region 4B Wrestling Tournament and competed at state. His 16-16 record included first-place finishes in Mobridge and Lemmon.
Taylon Carmody went 13-8 at 105 pounds and finished fifth in Region 4B.
Match points earned by the Tigers were: Steiger 352, Kamron Pearman 207, Norder 119, Ford 107, Holzer 75, Bearsheart and Carmody 72 each, Kyler Pearman 65, Two Hearts 55, Wientjes 53, Wellner 50 and Zimmer 25.
The Tigers went 2-2 in duals. They beat Linton/HMB, N.D., 36-27 and Harvey-Wells County, N.D., 48-18, while dropping a 60-18 match to Redfield and a 68-18 match to Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm, N.D.
