Steiger wins 132-pound title at Stanley County

Led by Jacob Steiger winning the 132-pound title, seven Tigers medaled at the season-opening Stanley County Invitational in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
“Saturday went really well,” said coach Nathan Ford. “It let us know where we’re doing well and where we need to improve.”
Steiger went 3-0 in winning his weight class. He opened with pins over Jhett Eklund of Burke/Gregory and Brayden Schlachter of Potter County before meeting up with Jayden Wiebe of Pierre in the championship. Steiger was down by two points after two periods before rallying for a 5-3 win.
“Jacob had a great day,” said Ford. “He wrestled hard and finished the way he should. He knew what he had to do and went out and did it.”
Isaac Aman at 120 pounds and Kyler Pearman at 220 pounds had third place finishes.
After falling to Nate Williams of Pierre in his first match, Aman came back to pin Colton Brady of Stanley County and then put Kort Shonebaum of Burke/Gregory to his back in the third-place match.
Pearman pinned Nathanial Nelson in his first match but lost to Rhoss Oliver of Burke/Gregory. He fought back for third with pins over Marcus Hofer of Ipswich/Leola/Bowdle and Matthew King of Pierre.
Ford said he was impressed with his two wrestlers fighting back and winning in the finals.
“I always want them to go for placing wins,” said Ford. “It’s good for kids to realize that third is better than fourth and fifth is better than sixth.”
Three Tigers finished in fourth place in Will Keller at 138, Tucker Holzer at 160 and Joshua Norder at 195.
Keller went 3-2 with wins over Burke/Gregory wrestlers Kade Stukel and Mason Peck, along with Tayson Jones of Faith. Holzer split four matches with wins over Jay Wright of Burke/Gregory and Andrew Dirk of Lemmon/McIntosh. Norder went 1-2 with a 9-3 win over Gabe Fanning of Bennett County.
Trent Two Hearts went 2-3 to take sixth place at 160 pounds. Two Hearts earned his medal with pins over Tyler Spencer and Jay Wright of Burke/Gregory.
Remmington Ford at 126 and Gavin Zimmer at 152 suffered 0-2 days.
“I’m very impressed with how everyone wrestled,” said Ford. “Even the ones who got beat out wrestled hard and put up a good fight.”
Three Tigers are ranked in the initial Dakota Grappler Class B Wrestling polls. Steiger is ranked fourth at 132, Aman ninth at 120 and Pearman 11th at 220.

Home match
The Tigers host Redfield on Thursday with matches starting at 6 p.m.
Ford said it may be a tough night with the Tigers still wrestling shorthanded (four wrestlers are out until the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton tourney on Dec. 21).
The Pheasants are the seventh-ranked Class B team and have six ranked wrestlers, including two top-ranked wrestlers, Riley Whitley at 113 and Mason Fey at 145.
“Redfield is always tough,” said Ford. “We just have to prepare for them and wrestle hard.”
On Saturday, the Tigers make their annual trip to Faulkton for the Faulkton Invitational.
“It’s a good tourney with some pretty stiff competition,” said Ford.
In a 16-team tournament, the Tigers will compete against host Faulkton Area, Aberdeen Central, Clark/Willow Lake, Elk Point-Jefferson, Hamlin/Castlewood, Ipswich/Leola/Bowdle, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, McLaughlin, Potter County, Sioux Valley, Sisseton, Sully Buttes, Sunshine Bible Academy, Warner/Northwestern and Oakes, N.D.
