Tigers break out with five TDs in second quarter

By Jay Davis
After a shaky start, the Tigers settled down and put 36 points on the board in the third quarter and ran away for a 55-8 win over Cheyenne-Eagle Butte at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
“I counted nine fumbles and muffs,” said coach Dan Merkel. “Other than that, once we woke up, we played pretty well.”
The Tigers fumbled on their first play from scrimmage, but were able to keep Cheyenne-Eagle Butte from scoring.
Taking the ball on their own four-yard line, the Tigers went on an 11-play, 96-yard drive. It was not an easy trip down the field. The Tigers muffed the punt, fumbled but retained possession once, had a high snap, a procedure penalty and a clipping penalty on the drive. But, they made up for each mistake. Hunter Gill had back-to-back runs for a combined 20 yards. After the clipping penalty, Matt Lepke found Dylan Cerney open for a 62-yard catch and run. Then with 3:52 left in the opening quarter, Gill started up the middle and cut left to the end zone for the first score of the game.
The offense scored on its next six possessions. Gary Wollman scored the next two touchdowns. He caught a 12-yard pass from Lepke to make the score 13-0 and then ran the ball in from nine yards out to make it 20-0. On the next Tiger possession, Gill ran in from 27 yards out. Cerney took over from there, running up the gut for a 30-yard touchdown and grabbing a screen pass from Lepke for a 14-yard score. The second Cerney touchdown made the score 40-0 with 58 seconds left in the half.
The Tigers were not done. Jaidon Sjomeling picked off a Cheyenne-Eagle Butte pass on the Braves’ ensuing possession. Jeff Kemnitz made the score 43-0 at half, kicking a 29-yard field goal with two seconds left.
Adding up the points, the Tigers put up 318 yards offense in the first half. The defense did its part by holding the Braves to minus eight yards in the first two quarters.
Merkel said, aside from letting the football touch the turf, the Tigers did a lot of things well.
“The linemen and wide receivers blocked well,” said Merkel. “Carson Keller had an amazing game. Lepke threw the ball well. Dalton Martian at linebacker and Isaac Olson at defensive tackle were all over the place.”
With the clock running fulltime, the second half did not take long to complete. The Tigers took a 49-0 lead when Cerney ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run with 1:24 left in the third quarter.
The Braves got on the scoreboard with on a Harley Neigel to Grant Kohlus 14-yard pass play with 9:20 left to play.
The Tigers answered on the next offensive snap when Lepke hit Eli Richards in stride for a 46-yard touchdown.
“You can still see how young we are by how we started,” said Merkel. “We can’t have a first quarter like that this week or we’ll get beat.”
The Tigers finished the game with 452 yards of offense. Cerney ran for 140 and Gill for 65 of the team’s 266 rushing yards. Lepke was eight for 18 passing for 192 yards. Richards caught four balls for 98 yards. Cerney caught two for 76.
Martian led the defense with 5.5 tackles and a sack. Olson had two sacks. Sjomeling came off the bench for a team-high six tackles.
Kaytonna Bartlett led the Braves with 103 yards rushing. Brexton Traversie led the defense with six tackles.

Homecoming

The Tigers host the Redfield-Doland Pheasants in the annual homecoming game at Tiger Stadium on Friday.
“They are going to try and out-physical us,” said Merkel. “We need to play four quarters. We haven’t done that yet. If we put four quarters together the kids won’t believe how good they can be.”
The 2-4 Pheasants have wins over Crow Creek and Sisseton, while losing to Aberdeen Roncalli, Groton Area, Parkston and 38-0 to Milbank last week.
“This is big,” said Merkel.
The Tigers and Pheasants first clashed in 1952 when the Tigers won a 26-21 game. The series has been on-again, off-again ever since. The teams played every year from 1952 to 1957. They did not play again until 1968 and then played for 17 straight years through 1984. The series resumed from 1992 to 2004. Since 2003, the Tigers and Pheasants have played nine times. The Tigers hold a 27-13-2 edge in the all-time series, but the Pheasants have thee best recent memory when they laid a 50-0 whipping on the Tigers in the 2013 playoffs.
