Tigers respond after sluggish start against Wolverines

Bryston Goehring drives to the basket over Chance Gregg of Herreid/Selby Area during the Mobridge-Pollock Rotary Basketball Classic on Saturday. Goehring sparked the Tigers’ 58-39 win with a game-high 20 points.

After a slow start, the Tigers stormed back to defeat Herreid/Selby Area 58-39 in the Mobridge Rotary Basketball Classic, held Saturday at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium.
The Tiger offense was stagnant and error prone in the early going as they fell behind 11-8 over the first eight minutes. They committed seven turnovers, and had it not been for six points from Bryston Goehring, could have found themselves in a deeper hole.
“As a coach you hope you don’t come out sluggish after a hard-fought game the night before,” said coach TJ Knudson. “But we did. It’s a learning experience.”
The Tigers started turning things around with the first two baskets of the second quarter, but the Wolverines responded and fought back for a 14-12 lead.
With a loud visiting crowd and momentum appearing to again swing the wrong way, Knudson called a time out.
“We took the timeout to break their momentum,” said Knudson. “Our players took a deep breath and dug deep.”
The Tigers responded with an 11-1 run led by Cayden Eisemann’s nine points. The Wolverines found their footing after that, but Bryston Goehring scored his 17th point of the first half to give the Tigers a 30-22 halftime lead.
The Tigers took control of the game with a 15-2 run to start the third quarter. It was a run that was spread around with five different Tigers scoring.
With a 21-point lead built by the end of the third quarter, the game wound down quickly. Tray Hettick scored six straight points for the Wolverines to start the fourth quarter, but the game was never closer than 16 points down the stretch.
Bryston Goehring led the Tigers with a game-high 20 points, while adding five rebounds and three steals. Zane Reinert and Eisemann joined him in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Hettick led the Wolverines with 11 points. Carter Tisdall added nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Sisseton
The nets weren’t snapping, but the defenders were in the Tigers’ 46-38 win over Sisseton on Friday at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium.
“That was a huge win for us,” said Knudson.
The Tigers used constant pressure, forcing 28 turnovers, while the Redmen used a stingy half-court defense to keep the game close.
The Tigers did lead all the way after taking their first lead at 3-2 on a Zane Reinert three-point play, but Sisseton was never far behind. The Tigers led 10-4 after one quarter, 20-17 at the half and 35-27 after three quarters.
Braden Goehring was the offensive star of the game. He hit three three-pointers and scored 16 of his points after the intermission. Zane Reinert was the only other Tiger in double figures with 14 points.
“We had to work for our points,” said Knudson.
But, it was the Tiger defense that stood out on the night. Of the 28 Sisseton turnovers, 19 came via a Tiger steal. Bryston Goehring had six steals, Braden Goehring five and Eisemann four.
“We had guys just taking the ball away,” said Knudson. “They (Sisseton) were obviously uncomfortable.”

Ellendale
The Tigers will try to get to 4-0 at Ellendale, North Dakota, on Tuesday.
“We’re just happy to get to the break 3-0,” said Knudson. “I hope the boys enjoy some time off and come back with some new energy and are ready to take on Ellendale,” said Knudson.
Mobridge-Pollock and Ellendale are playing for the third straight year. The Tigers edged the Cardinals 62-58 in their first meeting in 2018 before running away with a 67-25 win last December.
