Tigers tear past three opponents

By Jay Davis

It took but a few possessions for the Tigers to establish their inside game and assert themselves as the stronger team on Tuesday in McLaughlin. Daniel Roberts scored the first five times he touched ball and the Tigers were out to a 13-5 lead. They nevered look back in beating the Midgets 73-41.
“We most certainly wanted to establish the inside game first,” said coach Tim Frederick.
With that taken care of, the Tigers set about establishing their up-tempo, pressure defense and creating easy baskets off fast breaks.
After jumping out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter, the Tigers started the second quarter with an 8-1 run lead that raised the lead to 27-9. The Tigers hit a lull for a while, but still went to the intermission with a 34-20 lead.
“At times we were a little flat,” said Frederick. “We got too deliberate.”
Amos Talks, who hit a three at the end of the first half, scored on a short hoop to cut the lead to 34-22 to start the second half, but that was as close as the Midgets got. Mobridge-Pollock ripped off the next eight points as part of a 13-2 run that made the score 50-26 and eliminated all but any drama that could come in the second half.
Roberts finished with a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds. He scored 15 points in the first half. Mitch Heumiller heated up with nine points in the third quarter and tallied 17. Zach Dockter made it a trio of Tigers in double figures with a 10-point game. Pearson Wientjes added four points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. He was a major factor in the Tigers holding a 47-23 rebounding edge.
While Frederick was pleased with his Tigers’ overall performance, he saw a place the Tigers could make an immediate improvement.
“We have to work hard at finding secondary post-ups,” said Frederick, “and recognizing kick-outs for open jump shots.”
He said the Tigers are scoring inside and outside, but the 12- to 15-foot jump shot needs to become a bigger part of the team’s arsenal.
Payton Tiokasin led the Midgets with 12 points and four rebounds. Austin Sitting Dog added 10 points and four boards. Clifford One Feather came off the bench to hit a pair of threes and score eight points.

Groton Area
A big second quarter was the deciding factor for the second night in a row as the Tigers beat Groton Area 69-54 at Mobridge-Pollock Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Tigers led 22-16 after one quarter after Pearson Wientjes and Daniel Roberts combined for 18 points.
Trading two baskets for one, the Tigers raised their lead to 43-22 before taking off on a 12-2 run to get to the intermission with a 20-point, 44-24 lead. Mitch Heumiller hit two threes and scored eight points in the quarter.
Pressure defense from baseline to baseline has been key for the Tigers lately, and it played a big part in dominating Groton Area in the first half.
“During the Christmas break we had some talks about the defense we want to play,” said Frederick, “and we came to understand that we need to play pressure defense. The kids are committed to it.”
The pressure defense caused the Tigers problems in the second half as Zach Dockter and Heumiller were both forced to the bench with four fouls each. As soon as the ball handlers were on the sideline, Groton cranked up its pressure. The result was six Tiger turnovers in seven possessions and a one-time 21-point lead had been cut to 61-53 with three minutes to play. As soon as the two guards got back into the game, the Tigers reassumed control and the Tigers pulled away for the 15-point win.
“We had some bad fouls, but if we were doing it all perfect right now I’d be worried,” said Frederick.
Roberts used his nine-point first quarter to score a game-high 23 points. He also led the team with nine rebounds.
“Even though we don’t have a 6-6 kid, we have a 6-2 kid that no one knows how to guard yet,” said Frederick.
Dockter scored 16, while Wientjes and Heumiller scored 10 each.
Mason Madsen scored 21 and Reilly Ell scored 16 for Groton, but both players fouled out trying to contend with the Tigers.

Miller
A 15-2 run in the second quarter set the stage for the Tigers to run away and beat Miller 67-48 in Miller on Friday.
The Tigers led 22-18 when the run, fueled by pressure defense and Miller turnovers, turned a tight game into a 37-20 Tiger lead at the half. Getting to the basket for close shots, the Tigers were seven of seven from the field in the quarter.
“Zach, Cody, Mitch, all the guards are loving this pressure defense because they get to make plays,” said Frederick.
The teams matched points for most of the third quarter until the Tigers cranked up the pressure again and finished the quarter with a 9-0 run that all but finished the Rustlers as the Tigers led 53-29. Dockter got hot during the run with a three, a two and a steal and layup at the buzzer.
Dockter led the Tigers with a season-high 23 points, including 14 in the pivotal second quarter. Daniel Roberts got the Tigers started with eight points in the first quarter and finished with 16. Cody Schaefbauer scored eight and Heumiller scored seven.
Lee Siversten led Miller with 17 points. Drew Bielke added eight.
