Tracksters win twice, qualify two at Pierre American Legion Relays

By Jay Davis

The Tigers and Lady Tigers spent the day in a Class AA field and still came away with two titles and two state qualifications at the Pierre American Legion Relays on Friday.
Steph Gemar stayed right where she has been so far this season, in first place in the discus. Gemar went 128 feet, 9 inches to win the event by more than 11 feet. Runner-up Michaela Mayer of Sioux Falls Washington was second at 117-8.
“Coach Lamb told me it was a weird weather day for the discus throws,” said coach Marty Looyenga. “He said the discus was going up and then the wind was knocking it straight down.”
The odd air did not keep Gemar from dominating her specialty event. The win was the 10th straight for the Lady Tiger senior, dating back to the Black Hills Classic last spring. Kacie O’Conner of Sundance, Wyo., won that day. Gemar has not lost to a South Dakota thrower since the Class A State Track and Field Meet in 2012, when she finished third in state.
Jason Hill, who became a long jumper just two track meets ago, won the event and qualified for state in the process. Hill took first with a top leap of 21-3.5. Second place went to Dan Marlette of Sioux Falls Washington who went 20-11.5.
“That was pretty cool,” said Looyenga. “We kind of feel like, ‘how come we didn’t notice this before?’ Jason had an event left in Groton. We asked if he wanted to long jump and he said, ‘Sure, why not.”
The 800-meter relay team did not win on Friday; the team in fact finished fourth. But that did not stop them from qualifying for state and posting one of the fastest times in Class A so far this season.
The team of Conner Stoick, Mitch Heumiller, Mason Keller and Austin Borah combined to run the race in 1 minute, 32.63 seconds.
“The 800 relay team ran solid, but they did have one handoff that wasn’t that great,” said Looyenga. “We think they can still get faster.”
It was the fastest Class A time in state until St. Thomas More ran a 1:31.7 a couple hours later in a meet in the Black Hills. The Tigers were beaten by three Class AA schools. Brandon Valley won the race in a meet record 1:29.64.
Relay teams had a strong day with all 10 teams recording season-best times. Four of the five boys’ teams placed in the top six, as did the Lady Tigers’ 800-meter relay team.
Stoick, Heumiller, Keller and Hill ran for the medley and 400-meter team. They placed third in the medley with a time of 3:48.79 and fifth in the 400-meter with a time of 45.29 seconds. Heumiller, Keller, Hill and Borah placed sixth it the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:33.15. All three of those times are within a second of the state-qualifying standard. The 3200-meter relay time of Hunter Gill, Justin Nobles, Jaidon Sjomeling and Gary Wollman took eighth with a time of 9:12.38, taking nine seconds off their previous best.
The Lady Tiger team of Madison Rau, Autumn Schlomer, Kayla Schneider and Grace Wollman ran a 1:55.12 to place fifth in the 800-meter. The other four teams all had top 10 finishes with the medley taking eighth, 400-meter taking ninth and the 1600-meter and 3200-meter taking 10th.
The 400-meter team of Alexa Schaefbauer, Maranda Wagner, Schlomer and Rau ran a 55.04. The 1600-meter team of Wollman, Lauren Henderson, Ashton Wiederholt and Brandi Martian ran a 4:29.86. The 3200-meter team of Henderson, Keely Moriarty, Becca Martin and Cassi Heumiller ran an 11:14.25. The medley team of Schaefbauer, Schneider, Wollman and Henderson ran a 4:43.24.
“Times are continuously dropping,” said Looyenga. “That’s what they are supposed to do.”
Borah added a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash. He ran a 51.89, just off the state-qualifying standard of 51.4. Cam Holmes of Brandon Valley won the race with a blistering 49.09.
Wollman did not place, but came very close to meeting the state-qualifying standard in the 800. Wollman ran a 2:05.7 to finish 11th.
The state-qualifying standard is 2:04.4.
Eighth-grader Carson Keller held his own against AA competition, taking seventh in discus and 12th in shot put. Keller threw the discus 122-5 and missed medaling by just one place. He threw the shot 42-6.5.

Howard Wood
The Tigers will square off against the state’s top competition for a second straight meet on Friday and Saturday at the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls..
“I’m excited to see what they can do at Howard Wood,” said Looyenga. “There’s a lot of opportunity there.”
Not every Tiger and Lady Tiger will get the opportunity to compete in Sioux Falls. Those who do not make the trip will compete at he Lemmon Lions Relays on Saturday.
