Two Hearts making progress

Mobridge residents were hit hard by the news of a Mobridge-Pollock student’s death in an accident on Tuesday, Sept. 15, which claimed the life of Emily Holzer, 16, daughter of Mark and Belinda Holzer of Mobridge.
Two other MPHS students were involved in the accident, Sara Cox, who suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at Mobridge Regional Hospital and Clinics.
Trenton Two Hearts, son of Teresa and Aubrey Two Hearts, was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident and suffered life-threatening injuries, including serious head injuries. He was flown to a facility in Fargo, where he underwent multiple surgeries and is facing more to repair the damage to bones in his face.
According to his sister, Anna Netzer, Trenton is in a rehabilitation center in Fargo that specializes in pediatrics. He has been undergoing physical and occupational therapies throughout the day due to the traumatic brain injuries he suffered. Trenton also suffered a significant stroke due to the accident.
“Because he was young and healthy before the accident, the doctors said his brain will find different pathways to function,” she said. “Hopefully the affects will not be as significant as in older patients.
Netzer said Trenton has made great strides in the past two weeks. He was infected with meningitis after the accident, according to Netzer, but has recovered. He suffered multiple face fractures, including his jaw, and has just been able to start eating real food.
“The goal he set for himself is for him to be home for Thanksgiving,” she said. “We are still planning on that.”
Trenton is having issues with his sight and hearing. It is unknown if that was caused from the accident or the stroke, according to Netzer.
“He is very lucky to be alive,” she said. “He is handling this the best that he can.”
Netzer said Trenton is walking better this past two weeks and he continues to show improvement through his therapy.
The plan is that he will continue with his therapy in Mobridge when he returns home and take trips to meet with his doctors in Bismarck and Fargo.
“Trent said his brain is starting to wake up,” Netzer said. “He is beginning to remember more and more.”
She said he has no recollection of the accident.
Netzer said the people in the community and at Mobridge-Pollock Schools have been very supportive of Trenton and his family during this time. Because he is returning to Mobridge soon, Netzer asked that anyone wishing to send him a card or letter can send them to Pastor Van Orman at the Trinity Lutheran Church, at 918 First Avenue East, Mobridge, 57601.
The family will pick up the mail when they bring Trenton home.
There has been a Pay Pal account set up for the family to help the family.
