USDA offering drought help to ag producers

There’s no end in sight to the drought despite some recent showers, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture has several programs to help producers during this tough time.
Walworth County is in the midst of a “D3” or “extreme” drought, meaning the area’s producers could be eligible for USDA programs, which can be applied for at their local USDA Service Center.
The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program can compensate eligible producers for expenses incurred from hauling water to livestock in counties designated as “extreme” by the U.S. Drought Monitor. Producers must report livestock loss within 30 days to be eligible.
The Livestock Forage Disaster Program will allow eligible producers to let their livestock graze on federally managed lands not typically open for grazing. If a county is in the midst of a severe drought, rated D2 by the U.S. Drought Monitor, the USDA can also authorize emergency haying and grazing on lands typically protected by the Conservation Reserve Program. Emergency haying and grazing could begin soon after August 1st, which marks the end of birds’ primary nesting season the CRP program protects.
Producers can find out more information at their local USDA office or at fsa.usda.gov.
