Weekend brings much-needed moisture

After months of little or no moisture, South Dakota was drenched over the past five days, making up for precipitation deficits across the state.
In Mobridge and the surrounding area, the Tuesday, May 5, U.S. Drought Monitor listed the area as having moderate drought conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that since May 1, 4.03 inches of precipitation has fallen in Mobridge. On Sunday, May 10, the NWS reports the 2.48 inches of precipitation that fell in Mobridge in the form of rain and snow is a new record for that date.
According to the NWS, there were reports of more than 5 inches of precipitation just west of Mobridge in Corson County near McIntosh, Bullhead and Walker.
According to NWS, precipitation amounts that fell in a 24-hour period between Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, include 2.45 inches near Glenham; 2.05 inches in Hoven; 1.81, in Java;  and 2.46 inches in Herried.
The precipitation fell in the form of rain, sleet and snow in the area and ranged from eight to 16 inches reported in some West River counties, to 6 to 8 inches in eastern Walworth County. In Mobridge, snow did not accumulate as it did in other areas.
For a time on Monday, roads in the eastern half of Walworth County were snow-covered and slippery. Sherriff Josh Boll said although there were no injuries, there were multiple reports of vehicles in the ditch along U.S. Highways 12 and 83.
“There were no major accidents, just people overdriving the road conditions,” he said. “The heavy snow caused a lot of havoc. Smaller vehicles were getting stuck in the middle of the roads.”
Boll said the plows were having trouble moving the heavy snow. He said he received reports of 8 to 10 inches depending on the area of the county. In Selby, there is tree damage from the heavy snow, with broken limbs common. Boll said there were also some power lines that dropped, but they were repaired quickly and power was restored.
On Monday, Mobridge Chief of Police Justin Jungwirth said there were no reports of damage in Mobridge and the precipitation was rain for the most part on Sunday as the temperature rose above freezing.
