Well-known resident found deceased in fire

A well-known Mobridge resident was found dead in her home Saturday, July 17, when emergency services were called to a fire at a Fifth Avenue West home.
The Mobridge Volunteer Fire Department and Mobridge Ambulance Service responded to a report of a fire and the discovery of Verene Faehnrich, 89, unresponsive in the home.
According to Mobridge Fire Chief Doug DeLaRoi, the fire started in the kitchen area of the home.
“It appears it started on the stove and pretty much consumed itself,” he said. “The fire used up the oxygen and went out, but it was hot enough to break the inside windows, but not the outside ones.”
The fire was contained to the kitchen. But there was smoke damage to the rest of the home.
The deputy fire marshal out of Aberdeen, came to Mobridge on Saturday to conduct an investigation. According to Walworth County Sheriff Josh Boll, he has not yet received the results of that investigation.
Officials reported an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.
There was another occupant in the basement of the home at the time of the fire, but he and his dog were able to get out without serious injury.
DeLaRoi said there were no smoke detectors in the home. He expressed the importance of having carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in every home, especially if there are children there.
“It is so worth the $15 or $50 it costs to have them in the home. They (alarms) save lives,” he said.
