Witness information leads to arrest for grand theft

A group of residents alerted the Mobridge Police Department Tuesday, July 28, of a theft that included multiple firearms, leading to the arrest of the alleged thief.
At about 6:30 p.m., a group of witnesses observed a female enter an unoccupied residence on Fifth Avenue West in Mobridge. Witnesses said the female exited the house shortly after carrying multiple firearms. Information was provided to the responding officers, which included a detailed description of the female suspect and the area in which she was going. This information proved crucial in the investigation, according to Agent Al Bohle.
Through the investigation, officers recovered two stolen high powered rifles at a residence on Eighth Avenue West and located the female at an another Eighth Avenue West residence where she was detained and later arrested.
Cheryl Kay Story, 51, of Mobridge was arrested on charges of third-degree burglary, and two counts of grand theft. Story is currently being held in the Walworth County Jail.
“This is a prime example of how the general public being observant can assist law enforcement agencies keeps the public safe and protect others property,” said Bohle. “Without the crucial and timely information from the witnesses, this case would have been a difficult case and two firearms may have ended up in the wrong hands.”
